Who can I vote for?
(most likely to apply to a State House race)
The Alaska Legislature is made up of the House and the Senate.
The Alaska Senate has 20 seats (4-year terms). Seats are divided among 20 lettered Senate Districts (A-T). Juneau is currently in Senate District B.
The Alaska House of Representatives has 40 seats (2-year terms). Seats are divided into 40 numbered House Districts (1-40). Your Senate District, B, is divided into two House Districts: 3 and 4.
Basically, if you live on Douglas or the mainland south of Egan and east of the airport, you're currently in House District 4 (''downtown''). Otherwise, if you live in the Valley or west of the Mendenhall, you're in 3 (''out the road'').
This only comes into play in elections when we're voting on State House races.
[3 and 4 are further broken down into Precincts like ''Juneau Airport,'' ''Mendenhall Valley No.2,'' and ''Gustavus'' because District 3 covers more than just Juneau. These only really matter when you're trying to figure out where to vote the first time. After that, they're only good for judging different neighborhoods on their voting habits.]
They finished re-gerrymandering the House District maps in 2023.
If you're curious what precinct you're in, click here and look at the District 3 and 4 maps on the list at the bottom (but they'll give you
the right ballot when you vote, so don't worry about figuring it out).
[Apologies to our regional neighbors for the Juneau-centricity of these descriptions.]
